Step 1: define the image requirement

Write down what the operator or system must see at night: a person across a gate, a vehicle at an entrance, a plate at a capture line or a perimeter segment. Include target size, distance, movement and the usable image detail required.

Avoid starting with a wattage or claimed range. Those values do not describe whether the beam matches the scene or whether the camera responds well to the wavelength.

Step 2: match the optical and control choices

Select wavelength after checking camera sensitivity and discretion needs. Match beam angle to the lens field of view at the target distance. Decide between continuous and triggered lighting from the capture strategy.

Confirm input voltage, switching or trigger interface, housing, mounting hardware and cable arrangement for the actual site. Treat every feature as model-dependent until it appears on the final datasheet.

Step 3: test and document acceptance

Test after dark with the intended camera, lens and settings. Review center and edge illumination, focus, motion, reflections, plate exposure where relevant, weather effects and any visible emitter glow.

Record the final model, wavelength, beam, voltage, control, mounting, camera settings and acceptance images. This creates a repeatable specification for procurement and later maintenance.

Who confirms final recognition performance?

The integrator or project owner should approve the complete system. An illuminator supplier can support selection but cannot guarantee camera analytics or ANPR accuracy.
