Where 850nm IR is commonly considered

850nm is widely used for CCTV night vision, vehicle access, ANPR assistance, yards, warehouses and perimeter monitoring. It is often selected when usable camera response is more important than minimizing the faint red glow that some emitters may show at close range.

The illuminator is only one part of the imaging chain. Sensor response, lens aperture, shutter speed, gain, reflective surfaces and mounting geometry can change the result, so a sample should be tested with the intended camera.

Match beam angle to the camera, not to a wattage label

A narrow beam concentrates energy into a smaller target zone, while a wider beam covers more of the scene. Neither is automatically better. The correct choice is the beam that overlaps the camera field of view at the required distance.

Before model matching, provide the camera model, lens or horizontal field of view, distance to target, mounting height, target width and any nearby reflective surfaces.

Define a safe performance boundary
